Reimagining the Conference Experience

Conferences provide the unique opportunity to stimulate and direct new collective conversations. Here are three examples – some shaped by global events and others by innovative intentions.

CO-NNE-CT and re-story

The year 2020 was undeniably a turning point for humanity. As the world shifted online, our perspectives on how we live and interact underwent a profound transformation.
For Gen Re, traditional client conferencing was no longer an option, so we quickly adapted by launching an online event platform to host live and recorded talks, presentations, papers, and reports—all in one place. We branded it CO-NNE-CT, a theme we had, serendipitously, chosen in 2019.
Amidst this unprecedented change, we also recognized the importance of capturing people’s stories. With funding support from Gen Re, a two-person crew set out—armed with a simple kit—to document these experiences both on camera and online. What emerged was a powerful narrative. re-story.world is more than a collection of stories; it is a call to action—a serious invitation to regenerative innovation for a more sustainable future for both humanity and the planet. The work has only just begun.

A Tale from the Edge

With “A Tale from the Edge,” a concept-driven conference experience designed to explore the journey from possibility to creation, Gen Re sought to showcase its innovative edge not just through content, but through the entire conference experience, ensuring that every element—both intellectual and sensory—left a lasting impact.
A highlight of the event was a transformative dinner theatre experience. On the first evening, delegates stepped beyond the conference space at 15 on Orange hotel and conference centre and into a converted church in Woodstock for an extraordinary night. The evening began in a hall of mirrors, a symbolic “edge of reality,” where guests enjoyed drinks and canapés. Then, the doors opened to reveal a beautifully staged dinner theatre performance, an intimate and powerful exploration of possibility and creation. The video below captures the performance.

THINK

In 2015, recognizing that disruption was reshaping industries worldwide, Gen Re set out to create a radically different kind of conference—one designed not just to discuss change, but to THINK differently about the future of protection platforms. To break free from traditional constraints and foster fresh thinking, we built a luxury tented camp at Paul Cluver Wine Estate, immersing participants in the natural surroundings of vineyards and apple orchards.
Everything about the experience was unconventional. Workshops on THINKing were held under trees, presentations unfolded in unexpected ways, and interactive sessions—including paper puppet-making and a thought-provoking performance piece—challenged conventional perspectives. Mirrors and props scattered throughout the venue further played with perception, offering a mind-bending take on reality.
